The ecological effects of wildfire are occurring synergistically with other global change agents, often with cascading impacts and compounding effects. Forest fire carbon emissions increased by 60% globally from 2001 to 2023, with emissions of 8.6 billion tons in 2023 alone (16% above average). Reflecting these growing impacts, 42 of 163 UNFCCC Parties report wildfires as a climate-related hazard in their NDCs and/or National Communications.
The Global Wildfire Collective (GWC) is committed to establishing and proliferating wildfire resilience and recovery strategies that produce multiple co-benefits to maximize well-being in both ecological and social systems.
