Director of the transdisciplinary Fire Centre, Professor of Pyrogeography and Fire Science at the University of Tasmania
Professor David Bowman is an Australian Research Council Laureate Fellow and the Director of the transdisciplinary Fire Centre at the University of Tasmania, where he holds a research chair in Pyrogeography and Fire Science. He is recognised as a thought leader in wildfire science and management publishing influential research in high-impact journals, providing policy advice to government, and serving as an expert media commentor. From 2019 to 2022 he was listed as a Clarivate highly cited cross-disciplinary Researcher.
Dr. Bowman is establishing the new transdisciplinary field of pyrogeography. Pyrogeography provides a synthetic understanding of landscape burning that unites human, physical and biological dimensions of fire from the geological past into the future and spanning local to global geographic scales. He has undertaken field research across Australia over the last 40 years and collaborates with a global network of fire scientists. His research combines a broad spectrum of techniques, ranging from molecular ecology, landscape ecology to social analysis and epidemiology. He is motivated by a commitment to improving the scientific basis of fire management.
