Experts say Manitoba needs better forest management to mitigate wildfires — but some divided on best practices

Amid one of Manitoba’s most destructive wildfire seasons on record, experts are calling for stronger, more proactive forest management strategies. GWC member Mike Flannigan emphasizes the need for preventive measures like fire bans, backcountry travel restrictions, and mandatory FireSmart programs, particularly in spring when most fires are human-caused. While some experts advocate large-scale prescribed burns and forest thinning, others support Manitoba’s current approach of allowing non-threatening wildfires to burn naturally, calling it a cost-effective and ecologically sound method.
