The first national collection of MapBiomas Fuego Chile reconstructs, using satellite imagery, the footprint of fire between 2013 and 2025 in the regions between Valparaíso and La Araucanía, which, according to CONAF data, account for more than 90% of the fires during that period. The initiative provides a standardized historical series to determine where, when, and on what land cover the affected areas are concentrated.
The collection allows for the reconstruction of burned areas year by year and their correlation with the characteristics of the territory, providing a new perspective for understanding the patterns of fire occurrence and recurrence. The results show that the affected area is not evenly distributed across the country. The 2016-2017 season saw 466,700 hectares burned , with the Maule Region accounting for 353,500 hectares affected. Furthermore, the large-scale fires in Las Máquinas and Santa Juana burned a total of 271,000 hectares , highlighting the potential impact of these events.
