The United States has accused Canada of mismanaging wildfires in Manitoba, leading to hazardous air quality for millions of Americans. In response, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew emphasized that wildfires are a natural part of Canada’s boreal forests and criticized the U.S. for politicizing the issue. Dr. Mike Flannigan, a fire science expert at Thompson Rivers University and a Global Wildfire Collective Charter Member, stated that climate change is intensifying the frequency and severity of wildfires, making them a global issue that requires international cooperation. He noted that while many Canadian wildfires are caused by lightning, human activity also contributes, and rising temperatures increase vegetation flammability. The dispute highlights the growing wildfire threat in both countries and the need for comprehensive strategies to address the challenges posed by climate change.
